☐ Data governance policies are documented and enforced. Not just written down, but actively applied, with clear escalation paths when data handling standards are violated.

Honest signal of data readiness: “Ready” data means people can confidently reuse it across teams and workflows without constantly debating accuracy, ownership, and definitions. If your teams are still having arguments in meetings about which version of a metric is the “right” one, your data is not AI-ready.


Pillar 3: Infrastructure – Can Your Systems Actually Support AI?

Even if your strategy is clear and your data is clean, AI workloads have specific technical requirements that many organisations’ existing infrastructure wasn’t built to handle.

Organisations often skip infrastructure readiness and jump straight into AI pilots, only to realise later that their core systems cannot support enterprise AI workloads. Honest signal of infrastructure readiness: Your architecture can absorb new AI capabilities without major rework. If deploying a new AI model requires a months-long infrastructure project, you’re not infrastructure-ready for AI.

Honest signal of governance readiness: AI governance is built into delivery workflows, not retrofitted after incidents. If your AI governance conversation has been “we should probably set up a policy,” but nothing has been documented or enforced, you are not governance-ready.


Pillar 6: Culture – Will Your People Actually Embrace AI?

This is the pillar that gets the least attention in technical readiness frameworks and the one that determines whether everything else actually works in practice.

You can have the cleanest data, the most capable infrastructure, and a governance framework that would satisfy a regulator. If your people don’t trust AI, feel threatened by it, or have no idea how to incorporate it into their work, the ROI is zero.

Many organisations roll out AI tools without sufficient training, governance, or change management. The result is “tool availability” but not “tool effectiveness” because the systems, skills, and trust to use AI well haven’t been built into day-to-day work.

☐ Feedback loops are established. Employees have a structured way to flag when AI tools aren’t working, producing poor outputs, or creating new friction, and those signals are genuinely used to improve the systems.

☐ AI use is normalised across functions. AI isn’t siloed in a tech team; it’s used across finance, HR, operations, customer service, and sales as a standard part of daily work.

☐ Workforce concerns are acknowledged and addressed. There is an honest, ongoing conversation about the impact of AI on roles and career paths, not corporate platitudes, but real engagement with real concerns.

Honest signal of cultural readiness: AI is genuinely used and valued by your business teams, and the people using it are asking for more, not looking for ways around it. If your AI tools are deployed but usage is declining, that’s a culture problem, not a technology problem.

Score 21–35: Operational Stage You have meaningful foundations in place, but important gaps remain in one or more pillars. The focus now shifts from building readiness to continuous improvement and staying ahead of the governance and infrastructure demands of increasingly capable AI systems.

According to Deloitte’s 2025 AI Readiness Index, organisations achieving an AI readiness score above 70% are three times more likely to implement AI successfully within twelve months.
